“You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:3)

COMMENT: Some of the characters we come across in the Bible really make you scratch your head when you read about some of their antics; for instance, take Micah. First of all, he stole money from his mother and then he confessed and gave it back to her. Stealing from his mother gives one some idea as to what Micah was about. Mom gave her son a portion of the money back saying “I have wholly dedicated the silver from my hand to the Lord for my son to make a carved image and a molded image.” Micah was obedient and did as his mother desired. In his home he had a shrine, an ephod and household idols. He even consecrated his son to be priest. It didn’t make a difference to him that his son was not a Levite. Before we get on Micah’s case too much, remember that the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree. In this day and age, unfortunately, we find some Christians who are following Micah’s lead, commingling Christianity with other beliefs such as Buddhism, Hinduism or the theology that Oprah espouses. They try to “manufacture” a form of belief that will agree with their lifestyles. Now it is also possible to be led astray by some doctrine that may seem to be close to genuine Christianity. Just as bank tellers are trained to discover counterfeit bills by studying the real stuff closely, we Christians should scrumptiously study the Scriptures so that our eyes will be wide-opened to counterfeit theology.
